Saskatchewan singer/songwriter Belle Plaine follows-up her critically acclaimed 2016 release The Unrequited Love with her third album, Malice, Mercy, Grief and Wrath – a superb, mix of traditional country, jazz swing, and rock n’ roll. Thematically, the LP focuses on forgiveness, redemption, love and hope while reflecting on the loss of her parents. Produced by Jason Plumb (The Waltons, Colter Wall) at Studio One in Regina, SK, it Plain is joined by special guests Colter Wall, Kacy Anderson, Megan Nash, and her partner Blake Berglund. Album highlights include: the timeless sounding duet with Colter Wall on “Is It Cheating”; the true story about her grandmother on “Laila Sady Johnson Wasn’t Beaten by No Train”; the moody “Death, Taxes, and You”; the gentle torch song “Radio Dreams”; the twangy “Squared Up”; and the hushed waltz “Rock Bottom.” Malice, Mercy, Grief and Wrath is a great album that placed high on many top albums lists of 2018 and is well worth seeking out. – Written by JFelton
