Blitzen Trapper and Friends Bring a Magical Summer Evening to Topaz Farm! Some concerts are memorable because of the music. Others are memorable because everything comes together at exactly the right moment. Saturday night’s sold-out Blitzen Trapper & Friends show at Topaz Farm was firmly in the second category.
As the sun dipped lower over Sauvie Island, a cool breeze rolled across the meadow while children danced and did cartwheels in front of the stage. Wildflowers framed the concert field, dappled light filtered through the surrounding trees, and at one point an eagle circled overhead, drawing as much admiration from the crowd as the musicians below. It was one of those evenings where the setting became part of the performance.
Leo Moon opened the night before returning throughout the evening as one of several special guests joining Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Earley for an intimate acoustic set. Rather than simply recreating familiar songs, the evening felt like a gathering of friends sharing music together.
The set moved comfortably through fan favorites including “God & Suicide,” “Girl in a Coat,” “Lady on the Water,” “Black River Killer,” “Furr,” and the closing “Thirsty Man.”
One of the night’s highlights came with a beautiful rendition of Beck’s Sea Change track “It’s All in Your Mind,” sung by Leo Moon. The understated performance fit perfectly with the relaxed atmosphere of the farm.
Alela Diane joined the band for several standout moments, including a gorgeous duet on “The Tree” and a heartfelt version of Neil Young’s “Comes a Time.” Her harmonies blended effortlessly with Earley’s vocals, adding another layer of warmth to an already intimate performance.
The “friends” portion of the evening wasn’t simply a gimmick—it gave the show an organic, collaborative spirit that made each guest appearance feel special. Instead of a traditional concert, the night unfolded more like an acoustic song circle between accomplished musicians enjoying one another’s company.
Topaz Farm has quickly become one of the Portland area’s most unique concert venues, and Saturday demonstrated exactly why. Just twenty minutes from downtown, audiences experience nationally recognized artists in a setting where the landscape is every bit as memorable as the music.
