Elvis Costello releases the country album Secret, Profane and Sugarcane his 29th studio album recorded in Nashville in a three day session with producer T-Bone Burnett who helmed Costello’s 1986’s rootsy King of America. Secret, Profane and Sugarcane features a miscellaneous collection of songs that demonstrate the merits of a rock star aging gracefully and supported by an all-star backing group that includes Jim Lauderdale (vocals), Emmylou Harris (vocals), Jerry Douglas (dobro), Mike Compton (mandolin) and other seasoned Nashville session musicians. Highlights include the boot-stomping “Hidden Shame,” tearjerker “I Felt the Chill,” and the tender waltz “Changing Partners.” Costello’s clever lyrics enhance the expertly executed country music and while I enjoyed the record this collection of extras and side-projects still feels a bit strung together.
