Big Star remains one of the most influential cult acts in rock/pop, profoundly influencing post-punk and indie pop artists like R.E.M., The Replacements, The Posies, Teenage Fan Club, Wilco, Elliott Smith and many others. Originally led by singing/songwriting duo Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, the Memphis-based group fused elements of the British Invasion’s catchy melodies and jangly guitars with The Byrds style harmonies. The songs on #1 Record are more lyrical and expansive whereas Radio City is more candid and to the point. Together they make #1 Record/Radio City re-release a great staring point if you are new to Big Star, but if you’re already a fan I would hold out for the Big Star Box Set.
