I recently discovered Lô Borges’ self-titled album which has been around since 1972 but new to me. Lô Borges draws many similarities to Clube da Esquina an album Borges made the same year with legendary Brazilian musician Milton Nascimento. Borges’ expansively lush soundscapes are in the moment and playful with dazzling, intricate guitar work and rich instrumental and vocal arrangements reminiscent of George Harrison. The album is filled with intermittent piano flourishes commingled with clever unconventional progressions; multi-faceted percussion rhythms, jazz twinged organ and melodic bass. Lô Borges simultaneously captures Brazil’s musical heritage and integrates it with soul, rock, jazz, and pop into a rock masterpiece that is spirited and graceful.
