Following George Harrison’s death in November 2001, Jim James (My Morning Jacket) recorded a tender tribute EP to “the quiet Beatle.” Released for the first time in 2009, the result is a spare, solemn collection of Harrison songs with no traces of Phil Spector’s lush orchestrations or Harrison’s infamous guitar work and mysticism, leaving only James’ piercing Americana tinged tenor and acoustic guitar. Steeped in reverb, slowed-down and minimalist, “My Sweet Lord” becomes a gentle devotional; “Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)” becomes a haunting ballad; and the country waltz “Behind That Locked Door” becomes an upbeat toe-tapper.
