Chicago septet the 1900s have endured some ups and downs since their 2007 debut Cold &, Kind, but with Return of the Century, a comeback seems well within their grasp. Interestingly, this sophomore release was inspired by Incredible String Band member Licorice McKechnie, but it doesn’t feel like a concept album. Jeanine O’Toole and Caroline Donovan share vocal duties, and their harmonies have a distinct calming effect on tracks like “Lay a Ghost” and “Lions Fur.” Often compared to pop ensembles like Belle & Sebastian and the New Pornographers, the 1900s write great pop songs that have a very balanced, polished sound and only occasionally feel a bit too precious. The more upbeat, guitar-driven songs like “Zerkalo” and “Kidnap Runaway” have a lovely, nostalgic tone, while the dreamier melodic songs have some beautiful arrangements that give off a strong sense of mood and atmosphere. – Written by DBosket
