Weathervanes, the debut release from Freelance Whales, is a nostalgic, dreamy album of soothing vocals backed up by a chorus of synthesized voices and an assortment of instruments ranging from banjo to glockenspiel. While this type of electro-folk-pop is nothing new – the influences of musicians Sufjan Stevens and Broken Social Scene is extremely obvious – Weathervanes is an earnest album that draws you in with clever instrumentation, down-to-earth lyrics, and interesting melodies. Formed just last year, this band from Queens shows a lot of promise. – Written by DBosket
