Canadian artist Julie Peel employs spontaneity and an independent spirit on Near The Sun, her full-length debut album. It is a calm, often melancholy, collection of quiet pop songs that have been compared to Beth Orton, Cat Power, and Aimee Mann, who Peel cites as one of her influences. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Peel recorded, mixed, and produced Near The Sun on her own. Most of the tracks were first takes, which gives the album a freshness that keeps the focus on Peel’s songwriting. Standout tracks are “Living in a Movie,” “Innocence,” the title track, and the Feist-like “Once More With Feeling.” – Written by DBosket
