Laura Veirs returns with her seventh album, July Flame, named after a variety of peach spotted at the farmer’s market in Portland, Oregon, where she resides. Like its namesake, July Flame has a homegrown quality that is genuine and warm. Along with longtime producer Tucker Martine, the latest set of songs from Veirs is perfect for the chilly and damp Pacific Northwest winter. Opening track “I Can See Your Tracks” is a simple, yet satisfying folk song that exhibits Veirs’ gorgeous, clear voice. Contributors to July Flame include Eyvind Kang on viola and The Decemberists’ Chris Funk on pedal steel. My Morning Jacket’s Jim James also sings on the closing track, “Make Something Good”. – Written by DBosket
