Feast of the Hunters’ Moon is the debut album from Portland, OR based Black Prairie, a band comprised of Jenny Conlee, Chris Funk and Nate Query of The Decemberists and folk musicians Annalisa Tornfelt and Jon Neufeld along with producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie). Black Prairie’s sound evolves around the diverse backgrounds of its members and an eclectic mix of Americana, traditional bluegrass and eastern Euro folk sounds. While the album is highly instrumental, Tornfelt’s occasional vocals contribute subtle layers of beauty, as the band shifts between from twang laden folk (“Atrocity at Celilo Falls”) to fiddle driven bluegrass (“Back Alley,” “Annie McGuire”), amongst other genres. With such an accomplished cast of musicians, you would expect a solid, inspiring group debut, and Feast of the Hunters’ Moon delivers. – Written by JFelton
