Idaho native and Brooklyn transplant Josh Ritter’s sixth album, So Runs the World Away, finds Ritter in what he calls a ”new period” in his life, with songs that are more expansive and intricate than on previous releases. A few standouts include “Change of Time” which begins as a gentle acoustic ballad but builds to a crescendo of electric guitar, organ, timpani and charming backup vocals and “Another New World” which layers piano, horns, and stirring organ with hypnotic acoustic guitars. So Runs the World Away is a soulful combination of contentious folk songs that channel the best of contemporary folk rock – everyone from U2 to Bob Dylan – while remaining true to Ritter’s own voice. – Written by JFelton
