Roky Erickson, former ‘60s frontman of psychedelic rock band the 13th Floor Elevators who spent time in the Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in East Texas and much of his adult life in a state of mental disrepair, has his first album in 15 years – True Love Cast Out All Evil. Fellow Texan and producer Will Sheff of Okkervil River selected 12 songs out of a massive array of 60 unreleased tracks Erickson wrote over the past few decades, including his time at Rusk. The Austin indie band backs Erickson up on the album, but it’s Erickson’s voice and lyrics that take center stage on True Love. The songs range from spiritual, folk ballads to rough, angry rock that represent one man’s past, revisited in a state of newfound health. – Written by DBosket
