Italian garage pop quartet Vermillion Sands (not to be confused with the similarly named 80’s Japanese progressive rock group Vermilion Sands or the ’71 short-story collection by J. G. Ballard) released their much anticipated self-titled full-length debut in March. Lead singer Anna Barattin’s undeniable charming and twangy vocals ground Vermillion Sand’s unique Americana folk laden garage pop, accompanied by unconventional piano and organ, fuzzy synths, drum beats, intense bass lines and jangly southern guitar. Highlights include the familiar (from the 09 In the Wood 7”) “In The Wood” and “Wake Me When I Die,” the banjo driven “Peter Peter”, the country tinged pop experiment “Razors”, and the bittersweet “Weary B. Weak”. All-in-all, Vermillion Sands is a solid debut and a band to watch out for in the future. – Written by JFelton
