The Antiques’ sophomore album Cicadas retains the warmth of Nicknames and Natives with the addition of intermittent angular guitars and retro Americana experimentation in the vein of Wilco. The album was recorded and mixed by Scott Solter (producer of The Mountain Goats, Okkervil River, and John Vanderslice) at his North Carolina home studio. Throughout the recording session, The Antiques experimented with their indie-folk-rock sound, incorporating new instruments like steel drums, Hammond organs, and banjos and other sounds like the wire recorder, distressed vocals, and cicadas, resulting in a vivid indie-folk gem.
