Minneapolis quartet The Spaghetti Western String Co. features instrumental music that is melodic, at times topsy-turvy, and bittersweet. The compositions combine the instrumentation of banjo, mandolin, cello, clarinet and guitar drawing influences from classical, jazz, bluegrass and the avant-garde. The new album Lull and Clatter features complexly structured songs that mix American and European folk traditions. 17 local musicians performed on the record, adding woodwinds, drums, fiddle, an eight-person choir and more. Lull and Clatter takes a fresh spin by combining traditional elements with progressive structures and arrangements. The Spaghetti Western String Co. is disciplined and precise, charming and beautifully atmospheric.
