2012 saw multi-instrumentalist/co-singer Brent Knopf depart the unconventional indie rock trio Menomena to focus on his side band Ramona Falls, leaving the future of the band uncertain. Fortunately remaining members Justin Harris and Danny Seim persevered, creating the album Moms that’s just as musically warped and thematically depraved as their previous releases with songs about unsatisfying lovers and family linage. The tight collection of ten tracks showcase Menomena’s renewed commitment and zeal through flute embellishments, thumping sax refrains, dramatic tonal shifts, beats and varied textures all culminating into a wonderful kaleidoscope of noise. Despite the major line-up change on Moms, it is a solid release that is the satisfying and interesting listen that I’ve come to expect from Menomena. – Written by JFelton
