Chicago indie band Fort Frances released The Atlas in 2011, a concept album where the ten songs function like pages in an atlas – maps that reveal different places and can guide one to or from the various locations. Founder David McMillin (guitar, vocals), who started Fort Frances as a solo act, is joined by Aaron Kiser (drums, vocals) and Jeff Piper (bass, vocals), who bring a broader sound and fine production sensibility to these strong, melodic songs. The influences of major acts like The Beatles and hometown alt-country heros Wilco are evident, yet Fort Frances create a sound all their own. Standouts on The Atlas include “Falling Down”, “The Ghosts of California”, and “If the Ocean Runs Dry.” – Written by SMarx
