Following the success of his 2007 debut, The Sun Is Always Brighter, and 2009′s Build Me This, Joshua James returns with his third outstanding folk album, From The Top of Willamette Mountain. Produced by Richard Swift, the eleven tracks showcase an evolving style that is more mature and dynamic, yet effortlessly blends with his characteristically incisive way of conjuring rural landscapes and expansive vistas. While much of the album still has an acoustic folk feel, songs like “Queen of the City” and “Sister” are rhythmic with prominent bass and percussion; “Surrender” is a catchy piano ditty; the atmospheric “So Did I” is complete with echoing electric guitar; and intimate duets “Willamette Mountain” and “Ghost in the Town” add to the record’s diversity. From The Top of Willamette Mountain displays a remarkably raw sound and a beautiful sense of immediacy and honesty, making it an excellent addition to James’ discography. – Written by JFelton
