Dum Dum Girls started out as a punky and plucky girl group led by Kristin Gundred (formerly of San Diego’s Grand Ole Party) a.k.a. Dee Dee, but life outside of rock and roll has waged a toll on the band the past couple years, pushing the group to develop a mature and sophisticated sound. Their recent five-track EP End of Daze was recorded in 2011 and 2012 with Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) and Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go’s) and features four originals and a cover of Strawberry Switchblade’s “Trees and Flowers.” As Gundred processed the unexpected illness and death of her mother, a darkness set upon the songs, eliciting grief, sadness, and painful beauty.
