Longtime stringband member Rayna Gellert has struck out on her own with a debut solo album, Old Light: Songs from My Childhood and Other Gone Worlds. The daughter of notable traditional fiddle and banjo performer Dan Gellert, the younger is a classically trained violinist who has been a staple on the contemporary roots scene, playing in bands Freight Hoppers and Uncle Earl and backing-up musicians such as Robyn Hitchcock and Loudon Wainwright III. The set of ten songs is comprised of traditionals and a few originals, and while Gellert is known for her fiddle work, here she primarily plays guitar and banjo alongside her lovely vocals. She is joined by a cast of talented guests including her father, Alice Gerrard, Scott Miller, Nathan Salsburg, Abigail Washburn, and Kai Welch. Fans of strings, old timey songs, and traditionals are sure to enjoy this release. – Written by SMarx
