For the fourth Bahamas release Earthtones, guitarist/songwriter Afie Jurvanen collaborated with the critically acclaimed rhythm section of Pino Palladino and James Gadson who’ve played dozens of legendary albums between the two of them, including D’Angelo’s Black Messiah. Jurvanen is no stranger to experimenting with genre blended music, and this time focuses on intermixing elements of soul, R&B and funk with pensive indie pop. Album highlights include: the smooth groove “No Wrong”; the funky spoken word number “Bad Boys Need Love Too”; the doo-wop tinged “Opening Act (The Shooby Dooby Song)”; the soulful “Way with Words”; the reflective song about mental health, “No Depression”; the funky slow jam “So Free”; and the catchy head bobber “Show Me Naomi.” I love Afie Jurvanen’s creativity and playfulness especially on Earthtones; it’s a fresh and very satisfying listen. – Written by JFelton
