Mipso – Edges Run

  • April 25, 2018

The Chapel Hill, North Carolina indie pop sting band Mipso’s fourth release Edges Run finds the band in the aftermath of hard times: deaths of loved ones, painful break-ups, relocation from the places they called home, and recording in the middle of dreary winter of the Pacific Northwest town Eugene, Oregon. It is no wonder the album takes on an introspective and melancholy undertone looming beneath clever songwriting and honeyed melodies that mix elements of contemporary and traditional country, folk and indie pop. Standout tracks include: the slow-burning opener “Take Your Records Home”; the playful country-tinged “Moonlight”; the beautifully tender “People Change”; the lush yet bittersweet “Weeper’s Woe”; the lighthearted shoegaze folk-pop mash-up “Servant to It”; and the gorgeously introspective “Oceans.” Mipso’s Edges Run is a beautiful and polished album that will likely make a lot of year-end best of 2018 lists. – Written by JFelton
