Oregon singer/songwriter An American Forest (aka Forrest Van Tuyl) follows-up his stellar 2016 release Rosas y Mesteños with his latest, Ol’ Yonder. Van Tuyl’s music is a poetic mix of country and folk inspired by the history, lore and his own experiences in Oregon wild country. Here the tales are set to ragged vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica, and a tinny recording style that mimics that old-timey sound. Album highlights include: the opening track “Alberta IV”; the banjo driven ditty “Diamond Joe”; the rambling “Pastures of Plenty”; the introspective “Hard Times”; the yearning “Lovesick”; and the heartfelt hard times tale “Don’t Take Nothin’ (Ma & Pa).” An American Forest’s Ol’ Yonder is an authentic and honest record that recalls the likes of greats like Billy Bragg and Woodie Guthrie. – Written by JFelton
