Houston based trio Khruangbin follows their breakthrough 2018 release Hasta El Cielo with third studio LP Mordechai – another polished blend of songs influenced by psych-rock, funk, dub, and world music. After being on the road three and half years, Mordechai is a bit homecoming album, written and recorded in their farmhouse studio in Burton, Texas, and features a culmination of their travels as well as paying homage to the place they are from. After collaborating with retro-soul singer Leon Bridges on the four-song EP Texas Sun, Mordechai is the band’s first album to prominently feature vocals, an element that adds a new dimension to their collective atmospheric sound. Notable tracks include: the opening track “First Class”; the slow-burning Asian surf rock, Persian funk, Cumbia influenced track “Connaissais de Face”; the infectious single “Shida”; a mellow reggae-infused song “One to Remember”; the sprawling disco-tinged “Time (You and I)”; the affecting soul track “If There Is No Question”; and the funky Afro-pop influenced “So We Don’t Forget.” Khruangbin’s Mordechai is another very pleasurable listen to chill out to especially in these hard times. – Written by JFelton
