Veteran Texas-based singer/songwriter/upright bassist Melissa Carper is known as a founding member of the bands The Carper Family and roots duo Buffalo Gals with girlfriend Rebecca Patek as well as being a member of Arkansas four-piece band Sad Daddy and her solo work. Prior to these experiences Carper spent her childhood devouring her parents’ vintage country records and playing in their band, she went on to attended University of Nebraska on a music scholarship and dove into studying early jazz. Carper follows-up the excellent 2018 solo release Brand New Old-Time Songs with On Daddy’s Country Gold – a 12-track collection of 1920’s – 1950’s style country, bluegrass, jazz, and western swing in combination with Carper’s lovely vocals, folksy colloquial expressions and perspective. Daddy’s Country Gold was produced and recorded by Dennis Crouch (The Time Jumpers) and Andrija Tokic (The Deslondes, Banditos) at Nashville’s The Bomb Shelter and features some of Nashville’s best: Chris Scruggs (rhythm guitar and pedal steel), Jeff Taylor (keys), Matty Meyer (drums), Billy Contreras (fiddle) and guest appearances from Lloyd Green, Brennen Leigh and Sierra Ferrell. Standout tracks include: the laidback opening track “Makin’ Memories”; the sweet love song “Old-Fashioned Gal”; a song about appreciating the simple things in life “Would You Like to Get Some Goats”; the slow tempo cheating song “My Old Chevy Van”; and the classic country of “Back When.” Melissa Carper is one of the best traditional country singer/songwriters of this generation and Daddy’s Country Gold provides a welcome escape from the craziness of today’s world to a simpler time. Daddy’s Country Gold is my favorite album of the year so far and as far as I’m concerned, a new classic! – Written by JFelton
