Fronted by vocalist and band leader Joey Quinones, Thee Sinseers, a Southern California group, has been refining its unique blend of ’60s R&B and smooth Chicano soul over the past five years. Transitioning from singles to a full-length album, “Sinseerly Yours” showcases their growth and potential. With lush orchestrations and captivating vocal performances, the album expands on the band’s signature sound.
Opening with “What’s His Name,” Thee Sinseers demonstrate their prowess in a three-minute display of heartfelt vocals, seamless harmonies, and emotive instrumentation. Despite drawing inspiration from the past, the group avoids feeling outdated. Tracks like the beautiful ballad “Hold On” evoke the spirit of Sam Cooke while maintaining a modern edge.
While the majority of the album resides in the ballad-to-mid-tempo range, there are moments that inject energy. “Talking Back” channels the groove of James Brown’s “Night Train” with lively calls-and-responses, creating a party atmosphere. “Can’t Do That to Her” seamlessly blends Motown harmonies with Latin soul, exuding joy and vitality.
In essence, “Sinseerly Yours” is a delightful journey from start to finish, offering a consistently engaging listening experience. – Jason Felton
