In “Revelations,” River Shook (formerly known as Sarah Shook) once again delves into the gritty reality of American life, all while embracing catchy country-pop melodies. Shook effortlessly channels a mix of toughness and weariness reminiscent of their earlier work, particularly 2015’s “Sidelong.” The newly joined Disarmers contribute solid rhythms and a range of soundscapes, though perhaps with a touch less intensity than the previous lineup.
Shook’s lyrical themes continue to tackle challenging emotional states. In tracks like the title song, “Revelations,” they paint a vivid picture of struggling with depression while maintaining an airy musical atmosphere. The juxtaposition between dark subject matter and upbeat melodies is particularly striking.
“You Don’t Get to Tell Me” finds Shook asserting boundaries with confidence, though acknowledging the toll it takes to maintain them. “Motherfucker” amps up the anger, reflecting the exhausting cycle of resentment. “Backsliders” delves into a toxic relationship dynamic with energy, while “Criminal” showcases Shook’s outlaw sensibilities with vivid imagery.
“Stone Door” dives into classic country territory with twangy gusto, while “Give You All My Love” delivers a more upbeat, electro-pop-infused vocal performance.
Overall, “Revelations” marks a mature return for Shook, who has been sober since 2019. With the support of the revamped Disarmers, Shook continues to balance restraint and passion, stoicism and vulnerability, resulting in a decisive and powerful album. – Jason Felton
