Born and raised in parts of Treaty Six Territory in Canada, Wyatt C. Louis is a nêhiyaw Plains Cree singer-songwriter. Louis’ debut album, “Chandler,” named after their middle name, was recorded in Calgary, Alberta. The album features ten songs that have been developed over several years, showcasing Louis’ gentle, melodic voice and establishing a finely crafted and well-produced portfolio poised to elevate their reputation beyond their homeland.
While Louis is an accomplished solo guitarist often featured on local radio, the addition of a full band elevates his music to a more commercial level. Producer and engineer Colin Carbonera used the intimate space at Phenix Warren’s Alta Sound studio to maintain a live feel for each track. The subtle use of lap and pedal steel, organ, banjo, mellow saxophone, drums played with brushes, and both upright and electric bass create a warm, sympathetic backdrop for Louis’ ethereal vocals.
A standout track on the album is “Dancing With Sue,” which has gained popularity on music streaming platforms. The infectious, danceable three-minute song explores themes of femininity and binary issues. As Louis explains, “It’s an ode to all my teachers growing up, and for the people who really saw what I’d be at a young age.”
Lyrically, “Chandler” captures specific moments and places that led to personal epiphanies for the songwriter. With a backdrop of Canadian prairies, seasons, and a weekend spent in Seattle, the lyrics are simply phrased and suggestive, allowing listeners to create their own interpretations. Though abstract at times, the words serve as prompts, evoking images and experiences that Louis conveys with authenticity and commitment.
Despite the unique circumstances of Louis’ upbringing and cultural heritage, “Chandler” resonates with universal themes of love, family, and friendship. Through this album, Louis has skillfully portrayed an inner life that connects with a broader audience, demonstrating his talent and emotional depth. – Jason Felton
