The Deslondes – Roll It Out

  • November 23, 2024

The Deslondes have returned with Roll It Out, their fourth album, offering another captivating slice of Americana infused with the unmistakable spirit of New Orleans. Known for their collaborative approach and effortless blend of genres, this release is a testament to their continued evolution as a band while staying true to their roots. Each member brings their unique voice to the table, resulting in a collection of songs that feels both fresh and timeless.

After experimenting with expanded instrumentation and layered arrangements on 2022’s Ways & Means, Roll It Out marks a return to a more stripped-down, organic sound. This back-to-basics approach brings the energy of their early days as a Crescent City dance band, aided by the addition of drummer Howe Pearson. His upbeat style re-energizes the group, making these songs feel alive and communal, much like their live performances.

The album opens with the infectious “Hold On Liza,” a fan favorite that finally finds its perfect form here, showcasing Riley Downing’s gravelly vocals and the band’s knack for crafting singalong anthems. From there, the band explores a range of styles: “Take Me Back,” led by Sam Doores, is a rollicking journey fueled by spirited guitar licks, while the soulful “Who Really Knows” struts with confidence, evoking comparisons to New Orleans funk legends like The Meters.

The Deslondes also embrace their more tender side with tracks like “Find The Ground,” a pedal-steel-laced ballad that feels like a warm embrace, and “Grand Junction,” a nostalgic ode that could easily be imagined in Glen Campbell’s repertoire. “I Don’t Want To Go Out Tonight” tips its hat to New Orleans piano greats, delivering a playful, foot-tapping charm reminiscent of Fats Domino.

The album closes with their take on JJ Cale’s “Drifter’s Wife,” a long-time live favorite that they commit to record with a heartfelt, harmony-rich arrangement. It serves as a fitting farewell, wrapping up an album that feels as much like a celebration of friendship as it does a showcase of musical prowess.

Roll It Out captures The Deslondes at their most cohesive and relaxed, delivering a collection of tracks that feel as natural as a jam session among old friends. It’s music that invites you in, wraps you in its grooves, and leaves you humming long after the final note. Whether you’re a seasoned fan or new to their world, this album is a reminder of why The Deslondes remain one of the most compelling voices in modern roots music. – Jason Felton
