Medicine County, the latest album by Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs, is steeped in traditional, rural American music and comprises songs that have a distinct backwoods, Southern sound that surprisingly comes from a British artist. Formerly of the girl group Thee Headcoatees, Golightly has been a prolific solo artist since 95, and this is her third album with Lawyer Dave as Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs. Recorded in rural Georgia where Golightly now resides, Medicine County has a straightforward, homey feel that is more than a mere imitation of early American blues and country. Songs range from traditional-sounding ballads and gospel tunes (“Dearly Departed,” “Medicine County”) to cracking back porch toe-tappers (“I Can’t Lose,” “When He Comes”). – Written by DBosket
