San Francisco’s Moon Duo describe their music as “primordial and disorienting sonic stew,” which is a pretty fair account of their sound, but the songs on Escape are more expansive and hypnotic than disorienting. The duo – Eric “Ripley” Johnson of psych rock band Wooden Shjips and keyboardist Sanae Yamada – take Krautrock beats and add an interplay of guitars and keyboards for 30 minutes of mesmerizing, droning rock that is dark and foreboding. Only four tracks long, Escape is an apt title, as it gives Johnson an outlet to branch off and explore other avenues away from his regular Wooden Shjips gig. – Written by DBosket
