Noise band Women, follow up their 08 self-titled debut with Public Strain. This Calgary quartet worked with Chad VanGaalen again to produce the album, and what we have are 11 captivating songs that use noise and distortion with pop influences. Listening to Public Strain, the music instantly invokes strong feelings of nostalgia, of a particular place and time. Some of these tracks have a cool cinematic quality to them (think Nolan’s “Dark Knight”) while others bring up comparisons to Sonic Youth. Patrick Flegel’s vocals blend in with the guitars as one of the instruments, not the centerpiece of the songs, which works well. I’m by no means an authority on noise bands, but I will say that I enjoyed this album quite a lot. – Written by DBosket
