The Head and the Heart is a sextet from Seattle that plays alt-country and folk music in the vein of Avett Brothers and Ryan Adams. Their self-titled full-length debut is full of well-written and wonderfully performed songs that showcase this band’s talent. Definitely on the earnest and optimistic side, singer Jon Russell’s vocals are expressive and strong. “Sounds Like Hallelujah” starts off as a fairly simple acoustic folk song, but then opens up with a gorgeous falsetto “Woooo” from Russell and then shifts gears into a rousing anthem braced by a pounding piano and a foot-stomping chorus. It’s great stuff that yes, sounds very familiar, but has enough passion and originality to really make its own mark. – Written by DBosket
