Olympia WA’s acoustic stringband The Blackberry Bushes have long been a local favorite, but with their second place win at the Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition and their new album Little Bit of Grace they are making a name for themselves nationally. Employing a new roots Americana style with an Appalachian sound alongside a Pacific Northwest indie music backdrop, The Blackberry Bushes produce a solid set of bluegrass songs and a couple of great covers including a Bill Monroe tune and a version of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” that involves twangy female vocals, fingerpicked guitar and banjo and sweeping fiddle. Little Bit of Grace is a wonderful introduction to a talented bluegrass band, one that I’m sure we’ll hear more of in the upcoming year. – Written by JFelton
