Canadian Mike Angus, frontman and half of the brother duo that partially comprise The Wheat Pool, released his solo debut full length, Hymns. In contrast to The Wheat Pool’s collaborative brand of loud, energetic country rock, here Angus pursues the simple beauty of acoustic guitar and sparse instrumentation, allowing his stunning songwriting to shine. Written over the course of two weeks at a Tuscan farmhouse, Angus ruminated on the hymns from his youth, contemplated the local religious art and reflected on the elements of sound and quiet and themes of love and religion, resulting in a collection of quiet, atmospheric and at times experimental tracks. Standouts include opener “Be There (You Won’t)”, “Italy”, and “Scaffold Christ.” – Written by SMarx
