Maine native and Californian songstress Amber Cross’ latest release, Savage on The Downhill, is a melodic collection of roots/folk. With a voice filled with raw emotion and lyrics that weave dark and timeless stories about love, loss, and loneliness, Cross draws clearly from the rich narrative tradition of folk songs. Produced by Canadian blues musician Ray Bonneville, Cross is joined by Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams; songwriting) and Tim O’Brien (fiddle). Highlights include: the evocative title track; the realistic yet hopeful “Eagle and Blue”; the emptiness of “Echoes”; and the album’s closer written by Ray Bonneville, Lone Freighter’s Wail. – Written by SMarx
