The Avett Brothers’ eighth album, Magpie and the Dandelion, was recorded during the same Rick Rubin produced sessions as 2012’s The Carpenter. While the songs from Magpie and the Dandelion may tread similar territory as The Carpenter, the Avett Brothers’ polished songcraft and instrumentation make even the leftovers sound great. The album opens with the lively harmonica soaked “Open Ended Life” followed by other standouts like the live recording “Souls Like the Wheels”, the rollicking “Another is Waiting”, acoustic weeper “Apart From Me”, and the piano driven track “Vanity.” While a quick turnaround from the Avett Brothers, it is definitely worth picking up if you’re a fan. – Written by JFelton
