Brooklyn trio The Bandana Splits – Lauren Balthrop, Annie Nero and Dawn Landes (Hem) – recently released their self-titled debut of Spector-esque girl group ditties. The band is a fun side project for the three, who gather regularly to indulge in their “Splits Days” when they work on backing harmonies and write much of their original retro sounding material. The songs themselves are fun and catchy, as the ladies perfectly recreate the doo-wop sound and sensibility as well as some lovely country crooners. Produced by Mr. Sam (Cohen of Apollo Sunshine), the influence of The Andrews Sisters and The Ronettes are clear. Standouts include opener “Sometimes”, “Stay if You Wanna”, and closing track “Hawaiian Love Song.” – Written by SMarx
