Durham, NC duo Baobab – Phil Torres (vocals, multi-instrumental) and Whitney Trettien (piano) – have released their self-titled full-length debut album of experimental folk. The two are incredibly educated: Torres possesses an M.S. in neuroscience, undertook graduate studies at Harvard, and is publishing a book titled A Crisis of Faith: Atheism, Emerging Technologies, and the Future of Philosophy while Trettien holds a Masters from M.I.T in comparative literature and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Duke in English. So its no surprise that they bring an intellectual edge, lyricism and nuanced textures to the table. Using acoustic and electronic means, their sound incorporates world music and chants. Standouts among the 14 self-produced tracks include “Brownian Motion”, “Getting To Know You”, and “Music For A Movie.” – Written by SMarx
