Seattle-based singer-songwriter/student Ben Fisher has a passion for busking – the connection with passers-by as his bellows catch their ears, the joy as someone stops to listen to a song and stays for two more, the dull thud of change landing in his lined guitar case. However, this young musician is starting to make a name for himself in this town, recently recording a live studio session at KEXP along with his weekly Ballard Farmers Market gig. His debut full-length, Heavy Boots & Underwoods, is an album of acoustic folk centered around Fisher’s intense tenor and emotive storytelling. Primarily accompanied by guitar and banjo, his go-to instruments, the album also features a variety of backing pieces such as bells, cello, organ, shakers, tambourine, and timpani. For a sense what this up and comer is all about, check out the title track, “Cast Your Line“, “El Llano Estacado”, as well as bonus track “Denton, TX” by Damien Jurado (available only on CD). – Written by JFelton
