Birch Pereira and the Gin Joints – Western Soul

  • March 10, 2018

Seattle based Birch Pereira and the Gin Joints’ latest outing, Western Soul, features a set western-tinged jazz and soul originals alongside reinterpretations of old blues, swing and early rock and roll numbers. The band is centered around upright bassist and vocalist Birch Pereira, and his music aims to transport you to the good old days of juke joints, speakeasies, honky-tonks and roadhouses. Highlights include: the soulful opening track “How Long (Until I See the Sun Again”); a slinky cover the Irving Mills classic “St. James Infirmary”; the lively swing of “Lulu’s Back in Town”; a cover of Ricky Nelson’s “Ain’t That a Shame”; the latin flavored “The Carioca”; the toe-tapper “A Love I Can’t Explain”; and the sultry ballad “Could It Be Something Else.” Western Soul is a fun record that mixes several genres to entertain fans and new listeners alike. – Written by JFelton
