New York trio Blonde Redhead is back with Penny Sparkle, its follow-up to 2007’s 23. Recorded in New York and Stockholm, this latest release from frontwoman Kazu Makino and twins Simone and Amedeo Pace is an intense set of psychedelic-pop songs that drift back and forth between dreamy and light and dark and foreboding. Makino’s vocals draw you into a futuristic scene, painted by thundering beats and synths. The band seems to have struck a balance between detached and accessible on Penny Sparkle. This isn’t commuting-to-work-in-your-Prius kind of music. This is after hours music, and the night is so much better because of it. – Written by DBosket
