Like Will Oldham’s (Bonnie “Prince” Billy) Everly Brothers covers album, with his latest, Best Troubador, Oldham pays homage to another one of his musical influences, the late Merle Haggard. Best Troubador was primarily recorded and mixed live on traditional country instruments like guitars, fiddles, banjos as well as flute and sax and Oldham’s distinct vocal style, resulting in laid-back and sincere tribute. There are more deep cuts than familiar hits here, but a few highlights include: “If I Could Only Fly, Pray”; “The Day the Rains Came”; and “I’m Always On a Mountain When I Fall.” Best Troubador is a deeply satisfying album and finds Oldham at his best while honoring someone who has greatly influenced him as a musician. – Written by JFelton
