Wisconsin singer-songwriter Sean Carey, best known as the percussionist and backing vocalist for Bon Iver, returns with his second solo outing, Range of Light – a quiet, slow burn of an album. The collection of nine tracks are steeped in childhood memories of times spent in California and Arizona, where visiting family and being out in nature passed the summers by. In anchoring the songs in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Carey grounds them thematically, imbuing them with landscape and soundscape. Highlights include: orchestral poems “Fire-Scene” and “Alpenglow”; the minimalist lullaby “Radiant”; the polyrhythmic “Crown the Pines”; and the wide-eyed folk tune, “The Dome.” Check out this gem of a sophomore album. – Written by JFelton
