Mangy Love marks the eighth album for Cass McCombs, who delivers another genre-bending indie rock gem. McCombs takes on timely sociopolitical topics drawing from genres of music like psychedelia, reggae, Baroque pop, funk and more. Mangy Love is one of those rare albums that reveals a little more with every play both from a lyrical wordplay songwriting perspective but also from the musical arrangements themselves. Highlights on this stellar release include: the satirical “Run Sister Run”; the soulful jam “Low Flyin Bird”; the 70’s rock inspired opener “Bum Bum Bum”; the collaboration with Angel Olsen on “Opposite House”; and the melancholic “Medusa’s Outhouse.” Mangy Love is an excellent album and one of my favorite albums of the year. Go see Cass live, he puts on a great live show! – Written by JFelton
