Ontario singer/songwriter Cat Clyde follows-up her 2017’s debut Ivory Castanets and 2019’s Hunters Trance with Good Bones – a collection of previously recorded songs revisited in a stripped-down acoustic country, folk, and blues format with only vocals, acoustic guitar, and minimal overdubs. By simplifying her songs, Clyde comes across less restrained, loose and vibrant in the delivery of themes of loneliness and heartbreak. Clyde’s vocals on the LP are nuanced, melodically creative, and employ a number of vocal improvisations, coos, scoops and scats. The acoustic format also enabled Clyde to experiment with shifts in tempo to add more emotional effect. Notable tracks include: the leisurely opening track “Mama Said”; the French pop guitar tinged “So Heavy”; the sullen heartbreaker “Man I Loved Blues”; the riveting “So Cold”; the brooding “Like a Wave”; the driving number “Running Water”; the lilting “All the Black”; and the playful ballad “Toaster” closes the album. If you are a fan of Cat Clyde, then the stellar Good Bones will be a treat to hold you over until her next album of new material. – Written by JFelton
