Pacific NW band The Cave Singers’ fifth album, Banshee, finds the group expanding their boundaries by going more electric/rock n’ roll than on previous acoustic based indie folk releases. The crowdfunded effort was produced by Randall Dunn (Marissa Nadler) who helped define the rich and expansive sound while letting some solid rockers stand out. Highlights include: the grinding opener “That’s Why”; the heavy-hearted “Lost in the Tide”; the upbeat “Southern Bell”; and slow burners “Strip Mine” and “Cool Criminal.” Banshee is a smart and successful evolution of an already great band’s sound. – Written by JFelton
