Straight from the heartland (Louisville, Kentucky) comes Cheyenne Marie Mize and her debut solo full-length album Before Lately. Following the October 2010 release of the EP Among the Gold of 19th century parlor songs with Will Oldham (a.k.a. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy) and her work as a vocalist and fiddler in the indie rock quintet Arnett Hollow, Mize explores the dreamy side of country and chamber pop on Before Lately. Mize’s voice possesses beautiful clarity which provides a striking compliment, and at times, counterbalance, to the lovely and spare use of guitar, piano, bells and percussion. Standouts among the ten tracks include “Rest” with a slight twang and simple instrumentation and the soulful piano laden closer “Doctor.” – Written by JFelton
