California singer/songwriter Chuck Prophet follows-up 2017’s Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins release with The Land That Time Forgot – another album showcasing vivid storytelling over a collection of songs paying homage to his rock’n’roll/pop culture heroes and his home city of San Francisco. The majority of the songs on The Land That Time Forgot were co-written by longtime collaborator klipschutz (aka Kurt Lipschutz), with recording and production done by Kenny Siegal (Langhorne Slim, Amanda Palmer, The New Pornographers) on the New York-Vermont border to get perspective on his hometown. Album highlights include: a tale about Great Depression dance marathons with “Marathon”; a wistful story about a voyage of the dead President Lincoln on “Paying My Respect To The Train”; a song about Prophet being born Nixon’s home county in southern California “Nixonland”; the political statement asking Trump to leave the presidency on “Get off the Stage”; a reflection on Prophet’s drug use when he was younger “High As Johnny Thunders”; the ode to metal-listening outsiders on “Willie and Nilli”; and a song about a childhood of abuse on “Waving Goodbye.” No matter which album you pick out of Chuck Prophet’s 15 releases, you can’t go wrong and his latest album The Land That Time Forgot continues that tradition nicely. – Written by JFelton
